Apprentice - Aircraft Support Mechanic (LGA)

The Apprentice - Aircraft Support Mechanic (ASM) is a critical TechOps role at Delta Air Lines. In this role, you will get on-the-job training that provides practical experience with the procedures, practices, materials, tools, and equipment generally used. You will serve as part of the crew that helps maintain the proper and safe functioning of Delta’s fleet, ensuring customers have an exceptional travel experience. ASMs will assist Aircraft Maintenance Technicians (AMTs) in technical or non-technical functions related to aircraft interiors (or other areas as needed).
You will have many opportunities to work with and learn from experienced AMTs, who oversee inspecting, implementing, or overseeing maintenance and alterations of aircraft and aircraft systems.
Under their mentorship, you will develop key knowledge and skills that will help prepare you to become a licensed airframe and powerplant mechanic.
DISCLAIMER: You must currently attend a partnered 147 Accredited school.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • The work schedule will be maintained locally.
  • No more than 30 hours per week scheduled.
  • Apprenticeship will conclude no later than 6 months from start date.
  • Must be able to read and write English and comprehend and apply information contained in technical manuals.Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Must have successfully completed the General Knowledge exam and successfully completed either the Airframe or Powerplant Knowledge exam and working to complete the last portion.
  • While in the apprenticeship program, continue to attend normally scheduled classes at the 147 A&P partnered school. 
  • Must be in last semester of completion for FAA Airframe and Powerplant certificate program.
  • Must successfully pass a class-required Assessment.
  • Must be enrolled in one of Delta’s 147 A&P-partnered schools.
  • Is at least 18 years of age and has authorization to work in the United States.
  • Possesses a high school diploma, GED, or high school equivalency.
  • Embraces a diverse set of people, thinking and styles.
  • Consistently prioritizes safety and security of self, others, and personal data.

Job Responsibilities:

Summary of on-the-job training (not comprehensive of all tasks):
  • Performs work activities in accordance with established laws, regulations, standards, safety protocols, and procedures to ensure safety of self and others.
  • Shadows AMTs to conduct inspections to locate damage, defects, or wear that may affect safety, reliability, or customer experience, reporting issues as appropriate.
  • Shadows AMTs to test machinery, mechanical equipment, components, and parts for defects to ensure proper functioning.
  • Work alongside AMTs to install, remove, or modify aircraft structures, systems, or components, following drawings, schematics, charts, engineering orders, and technical publications.
  • Work alongside AMTs to repair worn, defective, or damaged parts or components (e.g., seat gears, tray tables, wiring/electrical), using hand tools, gauges, and testing equipment.
  • Reads and interprets technical manuals and guidelines to perform inspections, installations, repairs, or other work activities.
  • Interprets and uses specifications, drawings, blueprints, diagrams, schematics, or flow charts to determine operational methods or sequences and to complete work activities.
  • Research manuals, flight logs, or other technical resources to gather information needed to complete work activities.
  • Practices safety-conscious behaviors in all operational processes and procedures
